Well to say it was good to be back would be an understatement - it was absolutely unreal after that first pass at 5.16 p.m. Friday 5th January, Nathan launched the Lexus Piranha Real Deal Motor Sports Insurance Hot Rod and we recorded our quickest ET, big improvement with a ground breaking 7.716 up 1 MPH from Sydney to 172.22 MPH, considering that is the first pass since the disastrous WSID Fire and Flex plate tearing, gearbox breaking and cylinder head smashing affair.
The large crew that we had at Willowbank were nothing short of wrapped or in the words of the new 12th man CD it was fully sick.
The next qualifier on Friday night at 9.47 p.m. certainly welcomed him back to the real world with a bit of water or lack of traction, one or the other, ended up doing a massive sideways lurching launch, got off it, got back on it, clicked it early and still went through at 150 MPH for an unrepresentative 9.372 ET. Saturday afternoon we would not exactly call the conditions great, the last qualifier produced another sub 8 second run with a 7.92 at 167.97 MPH.
The pleasing part about all this is that we used to have trouble running 8.30 and now two out of three passes in qualifying have been 7 second runs - in fact 7.716 was by far our quickest by over 1/10th. We use to be the last qualifyier in the field but initially there was 16 entered for this meeting and we qualified number 8.
First round of the eliminations against Les Byth, friend and foe alike but you would not meet a better family than the whole Byth family - Mum, Dad and all the kids, multiple dragsters and junior dragsters. Things looked pretty hard for us and then Les pulled an uncharacteristic red light. While Nathan's 0.476 reaction was quite reasonable he powered through to win with a 7.783 at 169.3 MPH moving on to take on multiple track champion Russell Schafer.
Whether you are a friend or foe of Russell's he is one hell of a competitor and proved so when the dreaded pencil snuck bye with enough time to be able to back off and make sure he did not break out this time and we went down by .026 - 26 thousands of a second and still recorded a great 7.813 at 171.49 MPH.
Not a bad weekend after four months off, a 7.71, 7.78, 7.81and a 7.92 - sensational.
The mighty Toyota chooks copped a flogging and we gave away 100 Lexus Real Deal Toyota Genuine Parts Hot Rod posters to young fans. The other advantage of being in the Pro pits is that you get a lot of spectators and we were able to have many younger kids up and put them in the race car so proud Mum's and Dad's and brothers and sisters could take photo's of them accordingly.
Our next meeting will be at Palmyra for the season opener on the 3rd February and we will be back at Willowbank on the 24th March. The drive home is never as good as the drive down but mind you the drive down was not that flash either. Nathan picked the truck up in Brisbane on Sunday, drove back on Monday and we then got the bottom end of the motor back on Tuesday. After a huge effort from the crew inlcuding Darren "Whitey" White, Steve "Macca" MacIntosh, fellow racer Wayne Hargreaves, Anthony Milne and especially our neighbour Alan "I want Jay Uptons Bike" Croft, who spent all weekend repairing the cylinder heads, we had the motor and gearbox back in the car. On Thursday night before the meeting we started the motor at 7.00 p.m. much to the delight of the new neighbours children over the back fence who got their first taste of the blown Lexus in the dying light - it certainly can be heard for quite a few suburbs but it is only for a few seconds thank God. We finally loaded it up and left Rocky at 10.00 p.m. and for those of you who do not realise where Rockhampton is, it is 700 klms from Willowbank and it is a 9 hour drive in the truck.
We got to Maryborough and stopped because it was 3.00 a.m. at that stage. We headed off again and arrived at 1.00 p.m, set up and had a great weekend. When you race Friday night and Saturday and you party on a little bit and you get up 7.00 a.m. Sunday and pack it all up and do the 9 hours drive home and get back to Rockhampton at 6.30 p.m. unload it all and start pulling all the dirty washing and the eskies out of the truck, you have had enough but why do we do it - simply because we love it and there is no better place on earth for a drag racing family like ours.
Regards
PETER & NATHAN PEIRANO.

Nathan Peirano and Russel Schaffer are on the line for qualifying session number two, Peirano with a red light and way out of shape off the start line and aborts the run, it’s a nice straight pass from Schaffer on a deep light

CARPENTER FORD SUPERCHARGED OUTLAWS QUALIFYING ROUND THREE
Nathan Peirano's Lexus is not sounding happy in the burnout as he goes near enough to three quarter track, in beside him is Les Byth with a shorter sharper burnout, Peirano will have the head start, and its a red light to Byth so Peirano will go to the second round despite the break out on his dial in.

Nathan Peirano and Russel Schaffer, Peirano will get the head start, and the burnout from the Lexus is absolutely awesome, Schaffer much more sedate, Schaffer is trying a new technique by deep staging and they are off, with the Lexus using up a little of the lane to get to the end, Schaffer drives around him and takes the win.

Thanks for keeping me in the loop Peter - sounds like you have made a triumphant return. I hope to make the March meet at WIllowbank and see Nathan blow some doors off.

Love the hair. I knew you would find another use for it but I wouldn't suggest Kings Cross or Heather may never see you again. Or does she think thats a good thing. Hope you had a merry Christmas and a very Happy New Year. Good to see you back on deck after the fire and hope the memories are fading other than to remember it every time you are around high octane material.........and I don't mean Heather's breath after a night on the G & T.
Have a good one and hope to catch up sometime this year.
