For only the second time at Willowbank Raceway, the Rockhampton based
Lexus Piranha Real Deal Motor Sports Insurance Plan Toyota Genuine
Parts Hot Rod secured a magnificent victory over multiple track champion
Russell Schafer.
Fresh from the long haul to the Quit Motorplex in Western Australia
and a victory two weekends before at a six car supercharged outlaws
invitational at Benaraby Raceway, the Toyota genuine spares worked
a treat. Coming from position 16 with a best of 8.06 at 163 .52 MPH,
the Lexus Piranha Hot Rod overcame a field where most other competitors
were in excess of double the size of the little Toyota multi valve
240 cubic inch four litre power plant. With the now legendary Toyota
chickens hanging from the rear wing brackets during the burnout, the
first round match up was against Greg Iles and he would be doing the
chasing, the lucky chickens were removed from the back of the Piranha
hot rod. Nathan was out like a rocket, uses up his lane but hangs
in it right through the quarter for a win.
Second round of Carpenter Ford Supercharged Outlaws eliminations
against the beautiful XR8 BAE 511 cubic inch ford of Toowoomba's Tom
Coonan. It is great to get through the second round, we do simply
thousands of miles for the love of the sport. Tom Coonan would like
to now put us back into the pits. We both do burnouts, the fire has
gone out in Toms car as his lencodrive calls it quits, this is our
lucky break. We had a small leak from an overflow, staged the car,
shut down, went back to the pits and fixed it.
In the semi final we were up against Jon Sting with his big block
powered dragster, a very experienced racer with many victories under
his belt. We had dropped the dial in for this round to a 7.86 compared
to Stings 6.94 and left with a 0.433 reaction time compared to a 0.458
and then run a7.94 compred to Stings off pace 7.138 to make it to
the final.
We went onto the final against multiple track champion Russell Schafer.
Being the smallest cubed engine and obviously one of the slower cars
in the bracket we never get lane choice as that is the perogative
of the faster car so changing side to side is something Nathan gets
use too. Russell Schafer is no stranger to finals at Willowbank.
We have had more trouble than Ben Hurr in chariot races going to
and from meetings but the car in recent times has been sensational.
Schaffer is doing the chasing and we know the crowd would like to
see the underdog get up, the little engine against the big chev. With
a great 0.417 reaction from Nathan, his best for the weekend, against
a poor light from Russell Schaffer at 0.597, meant that it pushed
Russell to chase hard after his little snooze on the line and it was
enough for the dragster to break out, handing the win to what can
only be described as a very excited Lexus Hot Rod Real Deal Motor
Sports Insurance Plan, Toyota Genuine Parts team.
Whilst interviewed on the start line, I could only exclaim 240 cubic
inches of Jap crap chevy killer.
Wonderous applause from the crowd for the team driving down the return
road and from all of us in the Lexus hot rod, thanks to the crowd.
We received many congratulatory phone calls, emails, text message
and it is on to Mackay for the Sunstates in two weekends time and
then to the Winternationals for the biggest meeting of the year (in
our view) - Willowbank Raceway 9th, 10th and 11th June.
See you are the drags

Hello Legend and company,
Simply, the most interesting email all week!
Congratulations to all - great to see the bushies up and at it. Just
goes to show that the saying "there's no substitute for cubic
inches" is bullshit. Hey, everybody but the the seppos have known
this for half a century.
Well done Nathan! great drive and obviously it takes more than $$
to get to the line first - people still having trouble with this factor
in all sports.
Christ it would have been rough to have the biggest penis in the race
and be humiliated by a couple of chooks showing their bums to you
for a whole quarter mile of track!! Yeh, I know they were removed
because Toyota boys are gentlemen. Why not open the mouths and insert
a straight tube through to the rear for aerodynamics. Would also tend
to keep the rig in a straight line. Boat racers have had success with
this (tubes that is, not chooks).
Well done.
Les Unwin.
Hi,
