Willowbank Winter Nationals

8 - 10 th June 2007

Well that is another one that got  away.  We were extremely rushed in our preparation, only receiving the  heads back Tuesday prior to the Winternats, after the March meetings  disastrous explosion where we lost the entire engine, manifold - you name it,  it blew up.  We were just pushed and pushed for time and trying to put  the engine together Tuesday night before leaving on the Wednesday night does  not give you much room for error.

First qualifier  and we had some tyre spin at the hit of the throttle, a quick peddle job and a  to slow 8.27 was the result.  The conditions on the Friday and Saturday  were very tricky, whilst the air was great the track was cold due to the  strong winds and cloudy skies.  We had some drama's in the second  qualifier on Friday night with some fluid getting out and causing some  handling problems which resulted in Nathan aborting the run at around 400  feet.  With one qualifier left Saturday morning we were on theoutside  looking in and needed to put a number on the board.  

With the sun  shining and the wind dropping slightly the track held some temparature and  Nathan left with not many revs and produced and excellent - 7.78, 170 MPH  pass.  So we were in the field and looked forward to an exciting round 1  of competition.  In round 1 we would face Robert Coleman in the yellow  HQ, with Rob dialling in at a quicker 7.64 compared to our 7.72 there was not  much in it at the start, but with the chilly conditions on Saturday night both  cars lost traction however Nathan recovered and got down the track with a  peddling 7.96 at 171.95MPH for the win.

Sunday for final  eliminations and in the second round we would be against Daniel Reed, who was  racing for the championship.  This is where the late rush preparation  caught us out when the bolt holding the cam timing belt worked it's way loose  squeezing the dowel out and spining the cams out of timing, thankfully Nathan  caught it in time and we had minimal damage.  We live to fight another  day.

Whilst we have a few months off in preparation for our return to  Western Sydney International Dragway, that will bring back memories - good and  bad, 12 months previously was the disastrous fire which I still have many  recollections of, particularly the ambulance journey from the track to Concord  Hospital but anyhow that is a whole other story and we will be back in Sydney,  taking Alan Croft with us who will compete in modified bike.   

Unfortunately Alan just has not got the time to finish the Suzuki  Hayabusa and he will be resorting to his trusty 600cc Suzuki.  For the  effort he has put in on the Hayabusa with a wheelie bar, slick and some real  go fast bits, all of us at Team Piranha cannot wait see Crofty put down some  hard passes.

Nathan Peirano burning out alongside our current Championship points leader Daniel Reed, Reed into an tyre torturing burnout, as is Peirano, Peirano with the chickens on board, Reed is off, and its not a great pass for Peirano with fuel spraying out of the car for the quarter. Peirano will not qualify on this pass.

Nathan Peirano out now, brother Zac wearing a Canadian Mounties winters hat on the line or something quite weird anyway, apparently our announcer Ash has taken dibs on the hat, Kevin Bradley out and bang, a big tyre thumping wheel stand and shuts off, Peirano also with problems and neither competitor is in the field.

Dennis Moreau burns out alongside Nathan Peirano, now Moreau is already into his burnout routine, but the Rod of Peirano’s is not starting. They manage to get it going and front to the line quickly to make this pass…Moreau’s car is amazing but it heads over to the right hand side of the wall and has to back it off…it’s a personal best time for Peirano and he will make it into the field.

The Roadster of Nathan Peirano takes on Rob Coleman in the HQ sedan, Peirano will get .09 of a second head start with Coleman to do the chasing. The Toyota Chooks are looking pretty excited as they head to the start line, activity under the front of the Roadster with our track crew checking out everything, and Peirano has this as long as he doesn’t break out as Coleman smokes the tyres off the start line, tries to recover and loses the race right there and then…

Nathan Peirano and Daniel Reed, Reed needs to win this round to secure the National Championship, both into a torturing burnout routine, but oh no look at this Peirano’s car stops in the burnout, they push him back, there is no fire under the bonnet and this gives the Australian National Championship win to Team Reed and the Queensland crowd are going wild.

Two long time competitors of this bracket at Willowbank Raceway are in the final, now if Reed can take this he will have won the trifecta, the National Championship, the Track Championship and a Winternationals win, what a perfect weekend, Jon Sting in the dragster might just throw a spanner in the works, just a blink of an eye will separate the lights in this race, and Jon Sting red lights by 17 thousandths of a second and Reed takes home the trifecta, what a happy team they are.
