July 30th, saw Palmyra Dragway host its inaugural Nostalgia Drags,
and Muscle Car Shootout. With good weather, and a long line up of
cars waiting for the gates to open, everything looked promising for
an unforgettable “step back in time”!
With over 110 race entrants, and 90+ vehicles on display, there was
more than enough to keep everyone in attendance from getting bored.
Racers from as far away as Cairns in the north, and Brisbane in the
south, (and everywhere in between) turned out in force, to provide
the paying public with a spectacle not seen before, anywhere north
of our state’s capital.
Qualifying kicked off just after 9.00am, and with very few on-track
incidents, was bought to a halt around 1.00pm. Racing began shortly
thereafter, and finished about 5.30pm. Then the crowd was in for a
special treat, with Mike Tinney putting on an exhibition run in his
newly finished (7.00am that morning) blown 350chev Hotrod. After crossing
the finish line, Tinney proceeded to drive back down the dragstip,
stopping mid-track and throwing the car into several tyre-smoking
doughnuts, before retiring back to the paddock. After presentation
duties were completed, the band fired up, and a few tall tales told
over a cold ale (or two). What a day!!!!
NOSTALGIA - PEIRANO
With a mixed bag of Altereds, Slingshots, and Hotrods filling this
bracket, qualifying ended with a Altered of Warren Allen, recording
a 7.94, for the No. 1 position.
Round 1 opened with our top qualifier receiving the bye run, dialing
in at 7.90, and crossing the line with an 8.07. The blown Lexus –
powered Hotrod of Nathan Peirano also getting off to a good start,
taking the win over a red-lighting Rodney Jackson, Brad Turner towed
his Altered in from Moranbah, and was awarded the win (.01 over 8.91),
when he came up against the Slingshot of Fred Westhoff, all the way
from Nambour.
Round 2, found Warren Allen paired up with Rockhampton racer Russell
Power. With Power’s 6cyl Altered leaving first with a great
.004RT, it was Allen with the chasing to do. After nearly a four second
wait for the lights, and an ordinary .152RT, it was Allen crossing
the stripe first, stopping the clocks with a .02 over 7.97, to Power’s
.17 over 11.82. Pierano found himselft with the scheduled solo pass,
running an impressive 8.23 on an 8.23DI. Brad Turner and Rodney Jackson
locked horns, with Turner taking the win on a slowing .01 over 8.81,
to Jackson’s .08over 9.85.
Warren Allen won his 3rd Round encounter with Craig Wesener, when
the Slingshot driver left too early, allowing Allen the luxury of
coasting to the finish line. The two Rockhampton drivers of Peirano
and Power squared off, with the blown Hotrod also taking an easy win,
courtesy of a red light in Power’s lane. Brad Turner ran his
solo pass, recording an awesome 8.70 on an 8.70DI.
With three drivers on three wins apiece, a (closest to DI) countback
was required to find our two finalists. Brad Turner and Nathan Peirano
were both given the signal to fire up for the final. With a .011RT,
and a .07 over 8.32, Peirano took the winner’s trophy over the
slowing Altered of Turner.
