RACE REPORTS:

The Last Ride of Legend

Celebration of the life of a Legend - lets set the scene

Wednesday 28th January 2009 2pm, place - the Dream Centre Christen Church Narang on the corner of Broadbeach and Chishem Roads Carrara.  Probably the first thing one would notice pulling into the car park is the magnificent array of vehicles.  It was similar to a Hot Rod Show, 5 beautiful front engine dragsters all lined up with the rest of the car park consisting of an array of classic and modern Hot Rods, Corvettes and hundreds of friends congregating and catching up, all just wanting to be part of the celebration which was the life of a legend, Roly Leahy.

Roly was always a showman even to the end and it was only fitting for the coffin to resemble his race car which played a major part of his life and for Roley himself to conducted his own service.  Hearing Roly’s voice for the last time filling the cathedral via a recording bought both laughter and tears to everyone in the Christen Church    and we all realized how privileged we were to be part of this truly emotional celebration of his life.  Under the instruction of Roly’s voice we all sang the song “Look on the Bright Side of Life” and as the congregation exited the church the five Front Engine Dragsters fired up!  It would of bought a tear to any drag racers eye, they cut out the Hot Rods each side of Roly’s and as Roly’s dragster crept out towards the rear of the Hurst they let it run until it ran out of methanol creating an emotional charged silence.  You couldn’t have asked for a better send off, we will no doubt miss him and for those of us who were honoured with one of Roly’s early morning chats at Willowbank over a cuppa we will certainly remember him and share his stories over and over again.

Rhonda, Greg, Peter & families, well done the thought and planning you portrayed was indeed worthy of legendary status and certainly worthy of our friend whom we will never forget.

Once again thanks, see you at the drags.
