RACE REPORTS:

CROSSROADS FREIGHTLINES SUPERCHARGED OUTLAWS ENZED NITRO FUNNY CARS ROUND #2

Willowbank Raceway 16th - 17th January 2009

Well it was an interesting trip to Willowbank the home of horsepower and Nitro Funny Cars, on board we had our usual crew comprising of Nathan, Whitey, Damo & myself with this time Lachlan and one of our valued sponsors Des Brown from CQ Cabinet Makers. Usual deal, trying to get away from work early but it never happens instead we end up getting away an hour or two latter than planned and rocking up at Willowbank sometime between 1 or 2am on Friday morning, but your at least there. Friday dawned with pretty ordinary weather to say the least; first qualifier was at 4.35pm – 2891RA (relative altitude) with 50% humidity. Our first run was against Steve Easton in the Family Funny Car, even his dad competed in this for the very first time, a very well presented unit and it was good to see Psycho back in action. The Lexus Hot Rod ripped off a 7.919 @ 166.79mph; our second qualifying round was against John Flemming in a Nostalgia Front Engine Dragster 468cui against the little Lexus’s 240cui. He must have some problems with the power glide or something as it could only manage an 8.65 @169mph where as the 240cui Lexus Hot Rod went through at 7.936 @ 167.22mph. This time 2555 RA with 67% humidity, it’s pretty hard to burn water to make horsepower. Our 3rd and final qualifier was at 10.33pm the best air for the weekend so far 1866RA but a horrible 72% humidity. This time the Hot Rod was against Nikita Suridge in a Dragster 468cui from Warwick who was having trouble for most of the day. She put in a credible 8.097 @ 167mph with the Lexus Hot Rod clocking it best run for the weekend at 7.845 @ 170.635mph.

This is where it gets hard; our first round was not on until 3.48pm Saturday afternoon with the weather conditions again different 1620RA with 72% humidity. In our wildest dreams we didn’t expect it to run the time it did we needed it to run faster against Greg Clayton in the 451cui Chrysler Altered, the little 4l 240cui Hot Rod went 7.683 on a 7.76 dial in breaking out. Whilst the winner by the virtue of us breaking out was way off his 7.17 dial in @ 7.386 doing 186.41mph, but that’s racing it’s a package deal, combining reaction time and how close you run to your dial in. We never thought with the weather like it was and still nowhere near nightfall it would have dropped the 2/10ths compared to the other 3 runs, as well it picked up nearly 5mph @ 174.22mph – that’s racing.

One of the good guys in Outlaws and there are plenty, is Tim Caswell driving the Ford Fairlane tank 510cui Rodeck. Tim won the first round of the Nitro Funny Cars New Years series, and assured us that this was his first ever meeting he had won at Willowbank. Well you wouldn’t believe it but we did it again, two in two weeks first two ever. At 10.42pm on Saturday 17th January Timmy stuck to his guns running a 7.59 172.94mph @ 7.75 on a 7.67 dial in. Whilst the immaculately presented funny car of Wayne Price from Victoria broke out running a 6.433 @ 205.761mph on a 6.56 dial in, a run that wouldn’t have been allowed in eliminations because he ran faster than the 6.5 bottom end cut off and as there all on a Friday night and you don’t get to race again for another 24 hours. Nikita Suridge in the Dragster from Warwick had a few problems and could only manage 8.097; on the other hand the Hot Rod came out a little bit better 7.845 @ 170.65mph. First qualifier – it was great to line up with Steve Easton in the California Dreaming Funny Car, it was the first actual competition for Steve and his dad 1620RA & 72%humidity.

I have attached a photo of myself, Peter “The Don” Peirano with a heavily overloaded scooter which we came across on our journey. We waited for a bit so we could see what the person actually looked liked who rode it, but unfortunately time was not on our side and we could not wait any longer hitting the road again. This is just one of the many gems of things you see on the road. See you all at Western Sydney Dragway in February for the Summer Nats where we intend to defend our first Gold Andra Christmas Tree.
