RACE REPORTS:

Nitro Funny Cars

Willowbank Raceway 2nd & 3rd January 2009

Well the first round of the revised 2009  Enzed Nightfire New Year Series Nitro Funny Cars at Willowbank has been run and done for the Lexus Real Deal Motorsports Insurance Team.  Unfortunately we didn’t have the new F.E.D ready as it still needs some more work done on it but the Hot Rod performed very well considering the poor weather conditions.  The three qualifiers were a 7.90, 7.80 & 7.84 we dialled in @ 7.75 against Les Rodgie’s funny car “Teachers Pet”.  Nathan could not hear him coming as the funny car is a 200mph car which you can certainly hear only when they come thundering past, so unfortunately with backing off and two hits on the brakes we still broke out with a 7.70, needless to say it was an early night.  The only good thing to come of this was we got to pack up a lot of the trailer early in the night rather than early in the morning.

My eternal thanks go to the long suffering crew who put in many hours in the shed, as too to my long suffering wife Heather for the check book.  A special thanks to Alan Croft my next door neighbour for the immense amount of work he does on the heads, our two truck drivers Darren & Macca and Bernie for her special effort in helping keep the transporter stocked and in ship shape condition.  The highlight of the meeting for me was the excellent runs by Paul Shackleton & Damien Harris with there new nitro funny car, superb performance also from Gary Densham.  The lowlight was the sheer destruction in some of the other nitro funny cars particularly the Bailey brothers, how they ever have the heart and soul to take that junk home after they have been blown up and burnt by it only to rebuild it and have another go, it just amazes me.

Similarly, Brisbane based Steve Reed’s funny car provided the most violent alcohol explosion and fire that I have ever witnessed.  I was sitting with Deb & Sally at the time of the explosion and it really brings back to you how quickly things can go wrong, from the ecstasy of watching Steve go past to the agony of not knowing if he was hurt.  It was such a relief to hear the announcement that he had made it out of the car and was Ok.  On the Sunday morning Debbie bought Steve back to the track where there were only half a dozen teams left packing up and his only comment was he thought someone would of at least packed up for him whilst he was in hospital for the night.  Steve, see you at the track as soon as you can, I guess you will be stealing Debbie’s funny car now.

It never ceases to amaze me the varying people who approach the “Lexus Piranha Real Deal Motor Sports Insurance” camp to have look at the Hot Rod.  I am sure the crowd will double when we have the Penguin F.E.D at the track as well.  The crowd varies from all ages, we came across a special guest at our last meeting an Australian, Pommy with a dual passport that lives in Belgium and works for a motor bike shock absorber company in Belgium he was home for Christmas and this was his first drag meeting.  He was an absolute delight to have a lengthy conversation with but all he wanted to know was the G’s, the acceleration, the braking all in G’s.  I was to quick to point out to him that drag racers could not give a hoot about G’s all they look for is ET, MPH and win lights.

Remember too, any fans out there mums & dads if you have a youngster please feel free to bring them up to the Hot Rod and with time permitting we will always pop them in the driver’s seat or prop them on the mud guard for any photos.  At the “Lexus Piranha Real Deal Motor Sports Insurance” camp we are all well aware that the fans of today are the racers of tomorrow and without the paying public we would not be able to sustain the prize money.  Aside from that I just love the sheer delight and looks on some of the kid’s faces when you stick them inside the Hot Rod and Mum or Dad take a photo, it is something that costs nothing but the feeling is precious and is something money just cannot buy.

Our next meeting is the 2nd round January 16th & 17th look forward to an improved performance by the Hot Rod and maybe the debut of the F.E.D.  Following that we are off too Sydney Dragway for the 2009 Wynn’s Spitfire Summer Nationals to defend our Supercharged Outlaws crown that we won last year.

Regards and thanks to everyone,

Peter A. Peirano
